Frequently Asked Questions Click
here to see Dungeonmaster in action Dungeon Master, eh? Sounds kinky. Dungeon Master is a reference to the far more innocent roleplaying games made popular in the 80's such as "Dungeons and Dragons." How similar is Dungeon Master to Dungeons and Dragons (D&D)? Although the world of Atoll is wholly original, much of the creatures and denizens of the land have roots in the first edition D&D books (see our Monster Guide). Any character you may have seen or used in a D&D game would fit in smoothly here. The major difference is of course that anyone can use magic and can cast any spell with just a grand gesture and an ability to rhyme. Do I have to play? No, but the adventure is a lot more fun if you are part of it. If an audience member wishes to perform, then they fill out a character card in the lobby before the show. It is a purely voluntary participation. The rest of the audience can cheer them on, safe in the comfort that they are not the ones on stage. What is a Player Character? A Player Character is a member of the audience that has volunteered to be a part of the adventure by filling out a character card before the show. How are the Player Characters chosen? Six player characters are typically drawn at random before the show to participate in the adventure. However, additional adventurers have been called upon during the show - typically after we've killed off the adventurers onstage. How can I develop an idea for a Player Character? Pull from literature, film, video games.anything you can think of. Many people come up with their own original ideas. We have had ninjas, vertically-challenged dwarves, musicians, traveling actors, a cat-girl, an Irish priest, and even a character based on Richard III. Anything is possible. For inspiration, think Lord of the Rings or Final Fantasy. Who are all these other characters in the show? For a complete guide to all the characters in Atoll, click here. Do
we need a costume? Not at all. Only if you want to save $2 on admission! Be aware that if you wish to play and your character does not have a costume, one will be provided for you. Thus you may have no control on how you will be dressed, so it's probably a good idea to bring your own. What constitutes a costume? Something you would not normally wear in public without expecting some ridicule (Renfair does not count). Basically, something that suggests a character. You could have jeans, but wear a medieval tunic. A simple bodice could even be enough. All in all, it is up to the decision of the staff. Do
we need weapons? How do spells work? A spell is a simple rhyming couplet accompanied by grand gestures. For more information, click here. Do we need to know about characters, past episodes, and storylines to be able to play? No, but it wouldn't hurt. For a listing of all of our past storylines, click here. This Sounds like a LARP (Live-Action Role-playing). What's the difference? Unlike Dungeonmaster, a LARP is rarely performed onstage where others can mock you. In addition, not all of the scenes in Dungeonmaster involve the player characters. Many are pure theatre. The scenes that do involve the player characters attempt to follow a pre-planned narrative. However, there is still a lot of improvisation and unpredictable actions taken by the player characters. How much does it cost? Ticket prices are $10 with a discount of $2 with our flyer or if you come in costume. Click here to access additional information listed under "Prices" Are the discount punch-cards still in effect? Indeed. Get a hole punched. Eventually, you will attain that sought-after comp ticket when you fill it up. Where is it located? Click

"Directions" When is the next show? You can find out all of our show info here. Why are people yelling stuff from the audience? Because there are more of them than us, so we can't stop them. We just ask that they pretend to be furry woodland creatures when they do it and hope no one gets hurt when they throw money to poor player characters on stage. Who is in the show? Lots of cool people. Click here to access the information listed in "Cast and Crew" What is the History of DM? Since the dawn of time... Click here to access the information listed in "About Us" What is a Guardian of the Flame? This is a special Player Character with powers and abilities greater than those of other mere mortals. Find out more here. How can we contact you? You can send us email here. How can we contact other fans or subscribe to a newsletter? We have a Yahoo group that you can subscribe to here. Why? This
is rhetorical question that I'm sure we'll address someday in a very special
episode of Dungeonmaster. |
